Barcelona also has a fascinating artistic heritage. The city was home to many famous artists like Dalí, Gaudí, Miró and, for a time, Picasso. Cathedral of Seville

The lovely and ancient Cathedral of Seville dates back to 1196. Once known as the largest place of worship in the world, it attracts thousands of visitors each year. This church is recognized for its historical significance, La Giralda Tower and famous burial site, the tomb of explorer Christopher Columbus. The belfry La Giralda Tower features amazing views of Seville.

Other sites of interest inside the cathedral include Christian carvings, treasures and unique architectural designs. A well-known healing fountain is located just outside the church.

Gastronomy

No day in Seville is complete without visiting one of the Spanish eateries frequenting the providence. Some establishments provide traditional Andalucian offerings of paella and tapas. Others offer both regional and international seafood dishes and grilled meats.

Shopping

The Santa Cruz region is where you will find great shops. The winding streets take you around the best venues for authentic wares and clothing. Calle Sierpes is the place to find everything from clothing to plants. This popular street is great for weekend shopping trips.

Entertainments

Entertainment is found in the form of bars, theaters and cafes. The small cafes can help you unwind and relax after a day of sightseeing. You can sample tapas and different coffee varieties as you people watch.

The bars and theaters provide all sorts of entertainment. Great tasting regional drinks, music and dancing are good things to occupy your nights. You might visit Triana’s Calle Betis, an area known for its numerous discos and bars.

Museums and Art

The museums in Seville are worthy of any visit. Spending a day at the Museum of Art and Popular Costume or the Alcazar Palace can take you back in time. An archaeological museum in Maria Luisa Park focuses on Rome, the Stone Age and other times in Spain’s history.

Spending a day in Seville can be an exciting and interesting experience. With so much to see and do, you can always spend the next day catching up.

This island enclave is often described as a mini-Barcelona, with Gothic feel that has overtaken centuries of Roman and Moorish culture. You may want to visit the newly opened El Baluard, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which was built on the site of the remnants of the 16th century Bastio de Sant Pere, or shop for bargain pearls at the city's many jewelers.

Let's start in the Puerto del Sol.  This is one of Madrid's most important squares.  It's a great central location to start from.  In fact it's the point in Spain from which all distances are measured.  There are many hotels in the vicinity.  You can catch the subway here or just walk to the main sights.  It's centrally located between the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace in one direction and the museums in the other direction.

First head for the Plaza Mayor, the original town square, and a great place to start exploring old town Madrid.  It is completely enclosed with 5 story burgundy buildings.  The restaurants and tapas bars that line the lower story charge tourist prices, but it might be worth the price to order tapas in the Plaza Mayor.... that will give you a chance to sit and soak in the ambiance.

Continue on down the Calle Mayor, and take a tour of the Royal Palace.  Many guides gloss over the Royal Palace, but it's a great palace to see.  An hour or so will have you winding through extravagantly decorated rooms.  It is the official residence of the King of Spain, though the family usually stays at a smaller palace on the outskirts of town.  Be forewarned... if there is a "state occasion", as in if the King gives a dinner the night before, the palace may open late or even be closed! 

The Almudena Cathedral is across from the Royal Palace.  Near the Royal Palace, on the east side, is the Plaza de Oriente with the restaurants where you can stop for lunch.  A nearby subway stop lets you get to the museum area.

There are three museums to see.  The Prado is the most famous.  It's one of the greatest painting museums in the world.  In the Reina Sofia Museum you will find impressionist and modern art... most notably Picasso's Guernica.  Finally you must see the Thyssen-Bornemisza with a full range of art from 13th century to today.  Consider a museum card which will get you into all three for less than you would pay if you paid admission to each one separately.

In the afternoon, relax in Retiro Park.  It is close behind the museums.  Just inside the park, there is a large artificial lake with outdoor snack shops.  You can buy a tapas size plate of Seranno Ham, have a beer or a glass of wine and watch the locals pass by in "el paseo", a leisurely stroll around the lake.

Tapas bars are a part of Madrid's nightlife....  Order a glass of wine and a few tapas and enjoy.  "Raciones" are larger portions, tapas are smaller snacks.  Sometimes in the tourist areas, you can order a menu of tapas and get a sample of maybe 5 to share.  You won't REALLY be participating in the tapas bar scene, but it's one way to get your feet wet.  Tapas might become your dinner unless you are into eating late at night like Madrienos are.

After the first night, you'll get comfortable with tapas, and after your first day, you'll be glad you visited Madrid.

La Sagrada Familia is one of Gaudi's most famous works in Barcelona. My husband & I visited Barcelona a few years ago. While there, we had the opportunity to visit the Church of the Sagrada Familia. It is something you could talk about forever. The

The detailing of the building is exquisite. You can go to the top of one of the towers, which is definitely worth doing. While stepping onto a little balcony, you can see one of the most spectacular views you will encounter in Barcelona. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions and a MUST-SEE masterpiece of Antonio Gaudi. Be one of the hundreds of visitors each day. It is well worth the visit!

So, you’re going to be in Spain and know you’re going to see a Flamenco show as part of your tour activity or perhaps you’ve heard of Flamenco Tablaos (Flamenco bars) where more-or-less authentic shows are held, and you’re determined to attend one evening.  Don’t hesitate!  This is an experience that fairly demands  your attendance.

Don’t even think about being of missing the opportunity, especially if you’re in the Andalusia region (i.e. Seville),   The cost will be minimal as compared to the thrill and the memories (not to dismiss the pictures you may be able to take).  But take care:  Flamenco has been around for centuries and has become a highly packaged tourist attraction, best to consult the concierge at your hotel or your tour director.  Realize that these recommendations may be tinged with a little “baksheesh”, but they will be safe and entertaining.  Perhaps you should consult the Internet and read the reviews – there are plenty – about various venues.

Understanding the history of an event adds to your enjoyment, so here goes:  legend has us believing that the Gypsies of Spain originated the steps and music, but we must go back to Moorish times to find the roots.  The Moors occupied the Iberian peninsula for over seven centuries, accounting for the traces of Arab, as well as Jewish and Christian influences. 

Andalusia is considered to be the birthplace, but it wasn’t until the 18th century is there any reference to the dance by name. The historic accompaniment was hand clapping (the castanets were added many years later to simulate the sound), but now we appreciate the wonderful addition of guitars.

In the region around Cadiz, flamenco schools were created, leading to what is considered the “golden age” of flamenco, with cafes and restaurants featuring brilliant practitioners of the art. The passion and seductiveness of the fantastic costumes is Andalusian and the posturing can be traced to the stance and attitudes of the dashing matadors of the bull ring.

Shops and souvenir vendors will have castanets to sell and beautiful dolls in polka dot dresses…or, if you want to really stand out when you get back to your hometown, you will find merchants selling those polka dot or flaming red dresses with fabulous embroidered shawls.

A wonderful enlightening flamenco museum is in Madrid, but nothing will haunt your memory like that night you saw and heard authentic flamenco in Spain!

The capital of the Catalunya region is unique in the world. It’s easy to explore on your own or take a guided tour to learn more about the artists who lived here and their work.

These are the highlights:

• The Church of the Sagrada Familia is Barcelona’s most famous landmark and the masterpiece of Spain’s greatest 20th-century architect, Antoni Gaudi. The very unusual church is still under construction following Gaudi’s modernist plans.
• Other Gaudi structures include Casa Batlló, Park Guell and Gaudi Casa-Museu, the pink castle-style house where Gaudi lived, now a museum.
• The Museu Picasso displays works from the master’s formative years. It is a few blocks off the Ramblas in the narrow streets of the old town.
• The Miro Foundation was a gift from the artist Joan Miro to his native city. The striking white building showcases Miro’s contemporary art.
• Magnificent mosaic tile work is characteristic of the Palau de la Música Catalana found on the Carrer de Sant Francesc de Paula in old Barcelona. This concert hall in modernist style was designed by Lluis Domènech i Montaner and built between 1905 and 1908.
• The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya displays art from the Catalan region dating from the Middle Ages to the 1940s.
• The Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona features art from the main movements of 20th century art mostly from Spain and the region of Catalunya.
• Immerse yourself in Surrealism by taking a day trip to nearby Figueras, Salvador Dali’s birthplace and home of the impressive Dali museum.

Everywhere you turn in this stylish city you’ll see something of interest. Barcelona is certainly not to be missed by those who appreciate art, architecture and design.

You can take some Spain tours year round, however April, May, June, September and October are the most popular times to tour Spain. We've listed a variety of vacations so you can choose the perfect European experience for you. Whether you wish to travel independently on a variety of carefully created itineraries, or as part of an escorted group where all the planning if done for you and you can just sit back and relax, we have compiled a list of trips throughout Spain for you to choose from.

Also learn how to ask (in their language) if they speak English... or try to ask your question in the local language.  They will appreciate the effort.  Often they will volunteer, "Would you like to speak English?"  And if they don't speak English, they will probably try to find someone who does.  Other useful phrases are how much is it? Where is a bathroom? What time is it?

Carry a phrase book.  It will help to be able to point out a phrase if the local person you're asking doesn't seem to understand you.  Don't just speak louder... that isn't going to help.  Remember English is a foreign language to them!  Even if you're trying, your pronunciation might leave them scratching their heads or blushing as you've said something you didn't want to.  To be a traveler, you need a sense of humor... especially about yourself.  If they don’t understand you, don't be embarrassed.  Point to the word in the phrase book. 

Take a chance.  People are forgiving of tourists.... even the French who have an undeserved reputation for not being helpful.  The key is to be GRATEFUL that they speak a little English to help you... not to expect it.  When you're speaking English, speak slowly and avoid slang. 

Don't be intimidated by signs in a foreign language, as you can usually figure things out without asking.  Does it look similar to a word you're familiar with?  If it says "farmacia" instead of "pharmacy", take a guess... you're probably looking at that pharmacy.  Is there a sign with a picture that might help solve the mystery?  A green cross or a pharmacist's scale would be a good clue. 

Remember, you went on this trip to experience something different... so revel in that foreign language, learn a few words and enjoy yourself!  If traveling in a tour group, of course your guide will help you get around and can give you language tips as well.

Museu Picasso - The museum has the most important works by the young Pablo Picasso, focusing on the years that he lived in Barcelona.

Barcelona is rated among Europe's cities of style and is a meeting place for the fashion-conscious. You’ll find everything from books to jewels to haute couture and designer furniture – generally at a lower price than in cities like London and Paris. Several flea markets can also be found in squares around the town center. Gifts ideas available throughout the city are fans, shawls and castanets.

Food:

Barcelona enjoys a variety of high-quality seafood, meat, poultry, game, fruit and vegetables. The combinations of produce are unusual and good dishes to look out for include oca (goose) and canalons (Catalan cannelloni). Desserts include crema catalana (custard with a carmel crust) and mel i mató (cottage cheese and honey). Catalonia has many great wines particularly from Penedès, Costers del Segre, Alella and Perelada. Sangria, a wine and fruit punch sometimes laced with brandy, is a popular drink with locals.

As a ship’s captain who has spent more than 40 years at sea, it’s not surprising that I’m often asked about my favorite place to visit.

But where do I start when so many wonderful experiences come to my mind?  My favourites include the Scottish highlands and islands, the beautiful Norwegian Fjords and Hawaiian island of Maui.  Other places have a family connection such as Venice, where I’ve stood in St. Mark’s square and thought of my father victory-rolling his Spitfire Mk 9 over the campanile in 1945. Or the Crimea, where I gazed out at the fields which were the scene of the Charge of the Light Brigade, where an ancestor died in the great siege of Sebastopol in 1855. The Mediterranean island of Malta, my home during my teen years, also has a special place in my heart.

However, throughout the world one of the places that means the most to me is both historic and inspirational.    It’s Santiago de Compostela, one of the most sacred places in the Christian world after Rome and Jerusalem.

Perhaps for me, this Spanish city resonates because it’s believed to be the final resting place of St. James – one of the 12 apostles of Jesus.  As such it’s become a site of an incredible pilgrimage, with more than 100,000 people making their way there each year.

While not exactly a pilgrimage, my visit to Santiago (which translates to “St. James”) was one where I felt a strong connection to two important people in my life – my maternal grandfather and my son – both named James. 

My journey started from the picturesque port of Vigo, a vast natural harbor protected from the Atlantic by the Cies Islands.  It’s not far from Cape Finisterre which in ancient times, for those living on the eastern shores of the Atlantic, was the edge of the known world with only mysteries beyond its shores.

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the beautiful region of Galicia in the northwest corner of Spain.  It’s a unique place – and even has its own language – Galician, or Galago, similar to Portuguese.

The main attraction in town is the magnificent cathedral built nearly a thousand years ago over the shrine which is said to contain St. James’ holy remains.   He was martyred in Jerusalem but spent a great deal of time preaching in Spain, so according to legend his body was brought to this place after his death. In the ninth century what are thought to be his remains were discovered, and ever since it’s become a place of pilgrimage.

The tens of thousands of pilgrims who come here every year journey from all over Europe, many traveling overland by foot and spending weeks on the road.  The most notable route, the Way of St. James, starts in France and runs for about 500 miles.  Pilgrims have been making the often arduous journey for more than 1,000 years.  Not everyone walks solely for religious reasons. For many it’s an adventure through a foreign landscape and a unique opportunity to meet people.

Santiago de Compostela is probably the only UNESCO World Heritage Site where the road to it also carries this special designation.  The famous route across France and into Spain is not just a physical voyage but a spiritual journey where routine life can be put on hold — and will probably never be the same again.

I, instead, came to Santiago de Compostela while my Princess ship was docked at Vigo, about 60 miles to the south.  The drive north though the countryside was nonetheless a time of quiet contemplation about this special site I was about to visit.  One day, however, I would love to walk part of the Way of St. James.

No matter how you get there, an intense ambiance surrounds this place of pilgrimage. Some cathedrals are quiet, somber places, but in Santiago, the cathedral resonates with energy and enthusiasm, the culmination of days and, for some, weeks of exertion, anticipation and fulfillment.  Once they reach this cathedral, pilgrims receive a “compostela,” a certificate that recognizes their achievement.

The cathedral has been added to over the years, and today is a beautiful Romanesque building with an ornate Baroque façade with two bell towers.  Inside, the remains of St. James lie beneath the high altar in a silver coffer.  Grooves have been worn in some of the cathedral’s pillars from the millions of pilgrim hands that have touched them over the centuries.

On special days a mass is held for the pilgrims when a massive incense burner called the Botafumeiro is swung from pulleys on a long rope trailing clouds of smoke above the crowds while they sing the Hymn to Christ.  I’d say it’s one of the world’s most amazing experiences.

The cathedral is situated in the grand Plaza del Obradoiro, surrounded by historic structures.  Across the plaza is an exquisite hotel, the beautiful, ancient Hostal dos Reis Catolicos.  It was originally the site of a hostel to house pilgrims, and today is a five-star parador that’s considered one of the oldest hotels in the world.

A mass of cobbled, narrow, winding streets lead away from the main plaza with a whole variety of little restaurants tucked in among them.  It’s traditional to try several, so of course I did, and the food is superb.  Among the food we enjoyed were seafood from the chilly Atlantic waters, Serrano ham, cheeses, and caracoles (snails), all served with the delicious local wine, Albarino. It’s also customary to leave a small coin in gaps in the stone walls for good luck.

The many lovely little shops in the area mainly sell a selection of silver jewelry and artifacts.  Since the scalloped shell has become the symbol of St. James, it’s the traditional souvenir for a pilgrim and there are many silver versions for sale. The shell has taken on a number of special meanings, including serving as a symbol of the journey — the way the shell’s grooves meet at a single point represents the various routes the pilgrims have travelled to the cathedral.

No matter where I went in the town, I felt the spirit of St. James everywhere.  One of Jesus’ first disciples, he would become a key figure in the Christian world.  As I wandered the streets I thought about his deep faith, his commitment to principles, and how he had been a teacher to many.   I couldn’t help but feel the connection to my grandfather, James, about whom I can say these same things.  But through this ancient place I especially thought about my son, James, the continuity of the generations and my hope for the future.

Highlights

• Montserrat: The town of Montserrat was magnificent. You take a cable car, a furnicular and then walk 200 ft. to get to the beautiful monastery with spectacular views. The café here is excellent with great food. There are many hiking trails including one with called stations of the rosary with alcoves dotted along the way with religious symbols and statues.
• Madrid: The beautiful capital of Spain was one of my favourite places. The Prado Museum is one of the finest art galleries in the world. I spent an afternoon there studying the old masters. Dining is excellent in this city and there are many fantastic wine bars. I took a city tour and a delightful horse drawn carriage tour before setting off on my own.
• Barcelona: This center of art and architecture is absolutely delightful; there is so much to see from Miro to Gaudi to Picasso. It is a really lively city and also has great dining and wine bars. The harbour cruise was very enjoyable with so much history and good views of the city. Cirque du Soleil was playing and I caught a performance which was another memorable experience.
• Toldedo: This old university town is a World Heritage sight and really fascinating. It is not far by train from Madrid. I spent a delightful day exploring. Within the city, the Zocotren (a small, Disney-like train) winds through the narrow streets of the Old Town and the surrounding area. It is an efficient way to get around without walking everywhere.
• Seville: The capital of the beautiful region of Andalucia with its white towns set amongst the hills, surrounded by clementine trees. This is the center of Spanish culture where Flamenco flourishes. There are shops dedicated to flamenco products and all the embroidered shawls and fans you could want. The rest of the city is western, cutting edge and trendy. I took a city tour and wandered the streets.
• Gibraltar: I spent a very interesting day in the English colony of Gibraltar. I took a taxi cab tour which was really worthwhile as the driver took us to places we would have missed on our own. We had an excellent visit to the Rock and the Barbery Apes and I was able to have my picture taken holding one! They were very friendly. The fare for the cab tour was very reasonable. It is certainly not always cheaper and better to do it on your own.

Tips

• Food and wine are a bargain in Spain. Out of all the European Union countries, you'll find the best prices here. Wine is plentiful and very good for just 4 to 8 Euros a bottle.
• The Spanish still take time for Siesta in the early afternoon. Be sure to keep this in mind when planning as businesses, shops and museums will close at this time.
• From June to September Spain is more crowded with visitors and it can be very hot. Better to visit in the spring or fall but note that the swimming pool at your hotel may not be in use at these times. I found out when I got there that the pool at my hotel in Madrid was not filled until June 1.
• There are ATM machines everywhere you go in Spain - and Europe for that matter. No need to bring the travelers cheques. You get a better exchange rate and the fees are lower than cashing cheques.
• The high speed train from Madrid to Seville took just 2.5 hours. I recommend this experience when traveling in Europe as it is a unique way to travel with reasonable comfort. Sleeper trains have additional amenities and some compartments have private facilities.
• Downtown Barcelona is easily seen by walking. Driving to sights out of downtown didn't work for me as signage was very poor. It was better to take the train or organized tours to see the surrounding sights.

So, you’re going to be in Spain and know you’re going to see a Flamenco show as part of your tour activity or perhaps you’ve heard of Flamenco Tablaos (Flamenco bars) where more-or-less authentic shows are held, and you’re determined to attend one evening.  Don’t hesitate!  This is an experience that fairly demands  your attendance.

Don’t even think about being of missing the opportunity, especially if you’re in the Andalusia region (i.e. Seville),   The cost will be minimal as compared to the thrill and the memories (not to dismiss the pictures you may be able to take).  But take care:  Flamenco has been around for centuries and has become a highly packaged tourist attraction, best to consult the concierge at your hotel or your tour director.  Realize that these recommendations may be tinged with a little “baksheesh”, but they will be safe and entertaining.  Perhaps you should consult the Internet and read the reviews – there are plenty – about various venues.

Understanding the history of an event adds to your enjoyment, so here goes:  legend has us believing that the Gypsies of Spain originated the steps and music, but we must go back to Moorish times to find the roots.  The Moors occupied the Iberian peninsula for over seven centuries, accounting for the traces of Arab, as well as Jewish and Christian influences. 

Andalusia is considered to be the birthplace, but it wasn’t until the 18th century is there any reference to the dance by name. The historic accompaniment was hand clapping (the castanets were added many years later to simulate the sound), but now we appreciate the wonderful addition of guitars.

In the region around Cadiz, flamenco schools were created, leading to what is considered the “golden age” of flamenco, with cafes and restaurants featuring brilliant practitioners of the art. The passion and seductiveness of the fantastic costumes is Andalusian and the posturing can be traced to the stance and attitudes of the dashing matadors of the bull ring.

Shops and souvenir vendors will have castanets to sell and beautiful dolls in polka dot dresses…or, if you want to really stand out when you get back to your hometown, you will find merchants selling those polka dot or flaming red dresses with fabulous embroidered shawls.

A wonderful enlightening flamenco museum is in Madrid, but nothing will haunt your memory like that night you saw and heard authentic flamenco in Spain!

Tapas is a tradition that is believed to have begun in the 19th century in Andalusia, where single slices of cheese or ham were used to "cover" glasses of sherry to deter flies (Spanish verb Tapar means to cover). After finishing their drink people would eat the ham or cheese. Tapas are so much a part of the culture & social scene in Spain, that they invented the verb tapear which means to go & eat tapas!

Leather is a good buy especially shoes, bags and jackets. Two great souvenirs are Lladro porcelain figurines and Majorca pearls.

Food:

In many of the typical dishes of Madrid you’ll find chickpeas, garbanzo beans, asparagus, olive oil and garlic. Meats like lamb, beef and poultry are often mixed with rich sauces and spices but pork is the favorite among residents. Bacon, longanissa, and chorizo are very popular and can be found in many of Madrid’s dishes. For a different kind of dining experience look for traditional Tapas bars where a range of smaller local dishes are served.

The obvious start to sightseeing is the towering Giralda, the symbol of Seville. Journey through the city and you’ll encounter chic, whitewashed houses, scenic landscapes dotted with orange trees and a plentiful supply of restaurants and bars. Much like the immortalized legend of Don Juan, Seville is captivating and ever so suave.

Sights:

Alcàzar – This amazing fortress – a maze of courtyards, walled gardens and tiled arbours was first erected in 911AD. Don’t miss the stucco friezes adorning the hallway walls.
Casa de Pilatos – A 16th century palace which was once home to the dukes of Mednaceli and now houses statues by Goya Carreño, Batalloli, and Pacheco. 
Catedral de Sevilla and Giralda – This striking Gothic church is the third largest church in Europe. Inside you can see Columbus' tomb, works by Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya.
Museo provincial de Bellas Artes – This 1612 former convent is now a magnificent art museum housing one of the world's best collections of Spanish art, particularly from the medieval and Renaissance eras.

Shopping:

Find everything from flamenco dresses and fans to hand-embroidered shawls, Spanish guitars and ceramics in the city’s the old centre and Triana.

For fashion head straight to Nervión where you will find department stores and chain clothing stores packed with stylish items.

Remember to pay a visit to the lively street market El Jueves that specializes in books, second-hand clothes, curiosities, art, antiques and furniture.

Cuisine:

Sevillanos like their food. Typical dishes are simple and tasty and can be sampled cheaply in the city’s numerous tapas bars. Most bars will have their own house specialities, but here are a few dishes you can usually expect to see on the menu:

Pavias de Pescado - marinated fish fried in olive-oil
Caracoles - snails in a garlic sauce
Jamon- cured ham,

Other traditional dishes include:
Gazpacho - a cold soup made of made of tomato, cucumber, paprika, garlic, olive-oil and vinegar served with bread.
Pescait frito - fish covered in flour and fried in olive oil.
Huevos a la Flamenca- fried egg in a tomato and Chorizo sauce

Like most big cities, you will be able to take the hop on, hop off buses in every direction, but most will begin and end at the ‘heart ‘ of the city which is the famous Las Ramblas. Spanning from the Plaza Cataluna to a very tall and elaborate Christopher Columbus circle, you’ll have more fun here than at Rodeo Drive. Whether people watching with sangria wine, enjoying tapas or one of the many varieties of paella, you will be entertained. The mimes have taken entertainment to a new level, as they come to life for just a Euro. And let’s not forget the flower stands, little ducks, chickens, rabbits, aquarium, and well just about anything the locals want to buy.

Perhaps the most pleasant surprise was the fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, sweets, nuts, fresh fish, well you get the picture — 2 square blocks of fresh delights including little restaurants where you had to elbow your way for a bar stool but worth the wait.

• Be mindful of who is around when you are discussing your trip - there is no need to let too many people know or draw attention to the fact your house might be empty for a period.
• The best deterrent is to have someone housesit. If that is not possible, ask a trusted neighbor or friend to take in the newspaper, mail, and any other deliveries and keep an eye on the house. Give them your trip plans and an emergency phone number so they can reach you in case of an emergency. You can also arrange with the post office and newspaper to suspend delivery for the time you are away.
• Lock doors, windows and secure sliding doors (a metal rod or a broomstick in the sliding door track is an inexpensive lock), as well as the garage, the basement, and the attic. Some people even disconnect the power to motorized garage door openers.
• Move any valuables from plain sight.
• Check on your appliances, unplug anything that doesn't need to be on while you're away. Lower air conditioning/heating units to energy-saving levels.
• Set timers to turn on lights if you do not have someone staying at the house.

General Travel Tips

• Make sure your passport does not expire within six months of your date of travel. Some countries insist that your passport be valid for at least a six-month time period.
• Place an envelope in one of your checked bags containing copies of your passport, birth certificate and a back up form of photo I.D. in case your passport is lost or stolen.
• Place a copy of the detailed itinerary of your trip inside each piece of luggage. If your luggage is lost, this will help the airline locate you while you're traveling.
• If you are on Medicare and traveling outside the United States, be aware that Medicare does not cover any of your medical bills abroad. It's a good idea to get a travel protection policy that will cover these costs.
• Plan at least a day or two after your return home before scheduling any commitments; you may be tired after your journey.

Don't Forget

• Stow away some antibacterial wipes-they're a convenient way to clean up on the go.
• Bring a voltage converter with you, along with an adapter (to fit electrical plugs into foreign outlets). Note that some adapter kits don't include converters.
• Pack an extra pair of prescription glasses or contacts in case they are lost or broken.
• Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are a must. Never pack new shoes.
• Wrap a long strip of duct tape around a pencil and bring it along for the ride. Duct tape is the magic fix for everything from torn suitcases to a broken sandal strap.
