Spain Cuisine

Spaniards eat out a lot and one of the best ways to try a variety of dishes is tapas (snacks). Served in small bowls, the idea is to share a mixed variety of dishes such of olives, squid, cheese, meat and bread. Other speciality dishes include Sopa Castellana (baked garlic soup), Besugo al Horno (seabream poached in a wine sauce), Cochinillo Asado (roasted suckling pig) and Cordero Asado (roast lamb).

Many speciality dishes are made with seafood – eels, bream and squid. The area of Andalusia is noted for Gazpacho, a delicious cold vegetable soup and in the eastern regions there is Paella, a rice dish made with meat or seafood – well worth a try! Rioja red wine (pronounced ‘Ree-o-hah’), sherry (liqueur) and Cava (sparkling wine, which is much cheaper than champagne) are also popular.

We suggest, like most Spaniards, you drink bottled mineral water which is widely available.

Paella is the Spanish national dish.  It is a combination of seafood, chicken and vegetables mixed together over a saffon-flavored rice. Typical Catalonian cuisine focuses on fish dishes such as Zarzuela, up to a dozen different types of seafood are used in this dish which is served in a brandy and wine sauce. For dessert, try Crema Catalania, the local version of Caramel Custard.

Try a Sangría, a blend of red wine, brandy, orange juice, mineral water and fruit. Cava is the world-renown Spanish Champagne produced in the Penedés region just outside Barcelona.  Priorato is a popular local red wine.

Tipping:  In most restaurant a 10% gratuity is acceptable.  Remember that when meals are included with your tour, gratuities have been taken care of for you.

Spain Travel: Tapas! Authentic Spanish Cuisine

Posted on Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Tapas are canapes served day in & day out in every bar & cafe in Spain. They can be served cold or warm. You can have them as appetizers, or combine them for a full meal. Popular items for tapas are cheese, omlettes, ham, sausage, meatballs, seafood, veggies & bread.

Tapas is a tradition that is believed to have begun in the 19th century in Andalusia, where single slices of cheese or ham were used to "cover" glasses of sherry to deter flies (Spanish verb Tapar means to cover). After finishing their drink people would eat the ham or cheese. Tapas are so much a part of the culture & social scene in Spain, that they invented the verb tapear which means to go & eat tapas!
